Durdy Bayramov. Self-Portrait, 2003

“TO ME, TRUE HAPPINESS IS THE FREEDOM TO DEVOTE MYSELF TO ART AND I ASK FOR NOTHING MORE”
- Durdy Bayramov

Musical Palette of Durdy Bayramov is a composers’ competition that celebrates the artistic legacies of two of Turkmenistan’s greatest artists: the painter Durdy Bayramov (1938-2014) and the composer Nury Halmamedov (1938-1983). Their fates were very much alike: having lost parents at a young age, they were both brought up at orphanages and chose to devote their careers to art. These two acclaimed artists were close friends, esteemed colleagues, and held tremendous respect for one another’s aesthetic perspective.

“IF I WERE NOT A MUSICIAN, I WOULD PROBABLY BE A PAINTER.“
- Nury Halmamedov

Durdy Bayramov painted a number of compelling portraits of the composer, and Nury Halmamedov dedicated a touching piece of music, titled Shemal (or Wind), to the painter. This extraordinary piece of music served as the inspiration for this competition. To continue this legacy, we are pleased to announce a competition for young composers, who will have an opportunity to submit music for voice, utilizing poems written in honour of Durdy Bayramov.
